Oscar Bluemner

A heavy blue-black sky seems to press down onto the landscape of trees and buildings in this dramatic, moody painting. At right, the blocky shape of the train station leans at an off-kilter angle, while the power pole to the left tilts in the opposite direction, creating a sense of unease. This disquiet was exactly what Bluemner was trying to evoke; he used bold colors in daring combinations to create mood. Looking at the sky, you can see the artist experimenting with color saturation: sections of blue-white wash contrast with adjacent passages of deep indigo and black.
