Dog and Cock, 1921

Pablo Picasso

This picture invites you to find the familiar within the abstract. First, look for the dog in the lower half of the painting with its oval eyes and sideways triangular head. From there, it’s easy to see the pooch’s nostrils and pink tongue as it sniffs at the edge of a dinner table loaded with what must be food. Picasso’s humorous interpretation of this familiar dinner-table scene is rendered in a Cubist style: he breaks three-dimensional forms up and lays them out in flattened planes, making us re-think our assumptions about the way things look and fill space.
