Pierre-Auguste Renoir

The softly-blended pastels of the sky and light falling on the mountain evoke a warm afternoon in French Provence. The artist expresses volume and form through color tonalities; blues suggest distant shadows, while reds and oranges seem to blaze in the strong afternoon light. Yellow, green, sienna and red dominate the strong shapes in the foreground, while cooler blues, whites and pinks melt into atmospheric effects in the distance. The vertical motion of the brushstrokes leads your eye upward, toward the mountain and into the sky.
