Composition II by Ragnhild Keyser

Composition II, 1926

Ragnhild Keyser

Here, you may recognize still-life objects that can be found in an artist’s studio — a bowl, a chair, a plastic torso — but the composition is almost entirely abstract. The artist flattened shapes and solidified the spaces between them to create an intriguing, yet inscrutable suggestion of an interior scene. The composition is both precise and schematic, like an architectural drawing, yet the forms seem to have volume, depth, and dimensionality.
