Composition III, 1926

Ragnhild Keyser

A harmonious composition of curving and rectilinear forms are superimposed against a two-toned, muted background. While this composition is abstract, you’ll recognize familiar objects: the curving bodies of vases and the angular shapes of books. The design contains contrasts in color and shape as well as a pleasing unity and balance. The artist studied in Paris and was influenced by both Cubist ideas of breaking forms into geometric planes and the Russian Constructivists’ ideas of art as a medium to emphasize objects’ spatial presence.
