Grand Causeway, 1865

Robert French

A vast field of strangely regular hexagonal columns forms stepping stones that lead down a cliff and disappear into the misty Irish Sea. The artist made this image of what’s now a popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland, known as The Grand Causeway or The Giant's Causeway. The Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption, though Irish mythology attributes it to an argument between giants.
