A gleaming locomotive stands at the ready, not to transport passengers, but to wow spectators with its sleek lines, futuristic design, and raw power. The strange modernist structure in the background housed a diorama depicting a utopian city of the future. This image was taken during the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair, whose theme was “the world of tomorrow.” The fair’s slogan “Dawn of a New Day,” turned out to be particularly ironic, since six months after the exposition opened World War II began.
