The Flatiron Building, 1919

Samuel Halpert

Modern-day New York doesn’t look that different from this historic scene of the iconic Flatiron Building. Even if you substituted yellow taxis for the square-topped cabs lined up along the curb you could see almost the same view today at the edge of Madison Square Park. The artist masterfully uses color to create atmospheric effects, like the soft purple shadows cast by the famous triangular building and the yellow-orange blaze of the windswept leaves on the trees in the park. Under his brush, golden afternoon light transfigures the building façades, infusing them with an otherworldly lilac glow, capturing a moment in time and rendering it timeless.
