The Large Bouquet, 1907

Séraphine Louis

This enormous flower arrangement looks vibrant and intensely alive. Wispy tendrils of leaves reach out in every direction, like an unruly head of hair, while scarlet blossoms and brilliantly colored leaves appear to dance. Every leaf is embellished with detail — some have chains of white spine-like dots, perhaps representing seedpods. The self-taught painter used colors and pigments she made herself from unusual and exotic ingredients she never revealed. Her paintings' surfaces have a matte, almost waxy appearance. Louis’ intense images are sometimes interpreted as a reflection of her own psyche, walking a tightrope between ecstasy and mental illness.
