Mercuric II by Stephen Baumbach

Mercuric II, 2012

Stephen Baumbach

A silvery liquid hangs in suspended motion, like a splash of mercury, or a sinewy metal tree branch. While it appears to be liquid, it also reads as a polished structure that refracts light. To create it, the artist captured a stream in motion, freezing it into a single, perfect moment. He uses light and composition to refocus our gaze away from the natural form so we can see color, form, and texture more closely.
