Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen

A contented feline lounges on a cushion in this color lithograph. Its lithe, athletic body is at rest, but like most relaxing cats, a part of it — the intense green eyes and regal head — remain on standby for a pounce. Endearing tufts of hair escape from its upright ears, and its dusky, tiger-striped fur looks so rich and soft, you want to reach out and touch it. The artist, Steinlen, was undeniably a cat person; he produced scores of paintings and even sculptures of the many cats that frequented the Paris artists’ district, Montmartre, where he lived.
