Susoshiki with Maple Leaves in the River Tatsuta, 1920

Unknown Artist

This woven silk textile showing maple leaves floating in a stylized river comes from a susoshiki, a robe or kimono geishas wore. The swirling eddies are meant to depict the river Tatsuta, named for Tatsuta-Hime, the goddess of autumn. The river region has been famous since ancient times for its maple trees and autumn foliage.
