Tapestry of Time and Terrain, 2003

U.S. Geological Survey

This cartographic tapestry evokes butterfly wings, migration patterns, and the familiar shape of the North American continent. It’s actually a digitally combined geologic map and shaded relief image that shows the varying age of bedrock underlying North America from Panama to the Canadian Arctic. Its brightly colored sections map rock type, topography and time: pinks and oranges are thousands of millions years old, blues and purples are hundreds of millions years old, and greens and yellows are newest at millions of years old.
