Vilhelm Hammershøi

A woman in a dark dress sits at an elegant desk, absorbed in her task ⎯ at first glance, a quiet domestic scene. Yet the main focal point of this understated painting is not the human figure, but the magnificent window through which light streams a pane-shaped shadow onto the floor. In this painting the artist subtly transforms a room in his home into a space for artistic study of the effects of light on its surroundings. His paintings, like this one, were inspired by the simple, elegant lines of interior architecture that became his subjects.
