Bouquet of Flowers in a Vase by Vincent van Gogh

Bouquet of Flowers in a Vase, 1890

Vincent van Gogh

The deep blue background of this floral still life gives the composition a dramatic, mysterious quality, and in fact the painting itself is a bit of a mystery. Van Gogh didn’t mention this work in his letters, and scholars are puzzled as to its place in his artistic production. They’ve found similarities in this piece to works made at various points in the artist’s career, but have concluded that this painting’s color palette and style, especially its distinctive blues and ochers and graphic, brick-shape hatch marks, link it with the landscapes made just prior to his death in July 1890.
