Vincent van Gogh

Thick, choppy brushstrokes in brilliantly contrasting blues and yellows make up a swirling sky filled with the energy of creation. "This morning I saw the country from my window … before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big," van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. That morning star, hanging low on the horizon, shines out from a sphere of white and yellow paint spun into a radiant web, to the right of a majestic cypress tree. The flame-shaped cypress, a tree traditionally associated with death, here connects earth and sky.
