Wheat Field with Cypresses by Vincent van Gogh

Wheat Field with Cypresses, 1889

Vincent van Gogh

This painting is classic Van Gogh: a dynamic sky full of rolling clouds above a bright landscape animated as if by invisible forces. The artist regarded this view of towering cypress trees at the edge of a golden wheat field as one of his “best” summer landscapes. He’s applied the richly textured paint in thick layers of short, choppy strokes, giving the clouds a structure that makes them every bit as substantial as the undulating trees and waving wheat stalks below. Even the hills that form the horizon are rolling and moving, making it hard to tell where the land ends and the sky begins.
