Our Art / Albrecht Dürer
A master printmaker, Dürer (1471–1528) elevated the medium of print from craft to fine art. Dürer travelled throughout Europe before establishing his own workshop in Nuremberg, Germany. When still just in his twenties, he quickly established his reputation throughout Europe with his expertly crafted woodcut prints and engravings. Most of his contemporaries experienced his art through this medium because they were easily transportable, while his paintings were predominantly tucked away in private collections located in only a few cities.
