Our Art / Antoine-Louis Barye

Antoine-Louis Barye

Most famous for his sculptures of animals, Barye (1796–1875) created work that was rendered with impressive accuracy. His work triggered important debate about the threshold between fine and decorative art, creating table-top sculptures that conveyed a powerful sense of grand scale and pushed his work into the realm of “fine art.” He was also a prolific watercolorist and worked in oil, but his efforts at painting were mostly exploratory and quite private—his hundreds of paintings were only discovered in his studio after his death.
