Our Art / Christine Nguyen
Working across a range of media such as photography, drawing, painting, and installation, Southern California-based artist Christine Nguyen examines nature, science, and the cosmos, bringing the viewer closer to the vast, unthinkable depths of the universe. Delving into the mysterious realms of anemones, asteroids, plankton, and planets, her luminous work resonates immediately and innately. By magnifying our connection to and distance from the natural world, Nguyen’s work alludes to the contingency in the laws of nature.
Nguyen’s work is deeply informed by concepts of recycling, regeneration, and the imagery of science. Drawing from old photographs, items from nature, and a salt crystallizing process, her work imagines a utopic space where commonalities in species, forms, and environments become visible and expressive, suggesting past narratives and possible futures. Her practice explores the parallels between the macro and micro worlds and envisions an organic prism where vision can fluctuate between them. The results resonate with the artist’s statement that “there are no waste materials in these worlds: vision is a renewable resource.”
