Our Art / Jan van Huysum
Born into a family of artists, Van Huysum (1682–1749) was a Dutch painter who perfected the form of the still life. A prolific painter of large paintings of floral bouquets, Van Huysum quickly established his reputation as the leading painter of his time. Developing a highly realistic style, he was fiercely secretive about his painting techniques and forbid anyone, including his own family, to enter his studio for fear they would learn his technique. Although he was reluctant to teach anyone else his techniques, his popular style of painting had a lasting influence on numerous followers and imitators, both during and after his lifetime. At the time of his death, he was a very wealthy artist.
