Known for sunlit portraits and scenes, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863–1923) was a painter known for his paintings of life in his hometown of Valencia, Spain. His work is characterized by loose brushwork and warm lighting depicting the people and landscape under the bright sunlight. During his lifetime, formal portraiture which was more common, featuring sitters in dark somber settings. However Sorolla's felt this formality restricted his creative approach, instead preferring painting his portraits outdoors with his subjects illuminated by sunlight.
His work became widely seen around Europe and the Americas, as he often shown with his friend and contemporary John Singer Sargent. He painted notable figures including William Taft, 27th President of the United States, and Louis Comfort Tiffany among others.
