Our Art / Juan Gris
Closely connected to the innovative artistic movement Cubism, Gris’ (1887–1927) works are among the movement's most distinctive pushing Cubism’s fractured, geometric style. Originally trained in math and science, Gris saw the importance of mathematics in art and painted with precision using a grid structure and angular shading of figures. His work is distinguished from other Cubists of the time by his clear, rational and measurable quality. In contrast to Cubism’s often monochromatic palette, Gris painted with daring, novel combinations of color, in the manner of his friend Henri Matisse.
