Karl Blossfeldt

Best known for his striking photographs of plants and flowers, Blossfeldt (1865–1932) was a German photographer and artist. He was inspired by the repetitive patterns he found in nature's textures and forms. Though Blossfeldt never received formal training in photography, he specialised in macrophotography and designed a camera specifically for the purpose of magnifying his subjects up to thirty times its size, revealing details within a plant’s natural structure. These never-before-seen close-up views of everyday, garden flowers were presented in such a novel way that the forms took on refreshing, exotic characteristics. Blossfeldt believed that “the plant must be valued as a totally artistic and architectural structure.”
