Our Art / Mark Gould
Mark Gould is a multidisciplinary artist working in stylized graphics, illustration, hand made prints, digital art, painting, photography and video art. Based in San Francisco, his abstract work uses altered imagery, algorithmic gestural drawing and digital artifacts to advance an inquiry into new methods of abstract expressionism and surrealism in the modern era. Gould examines historical, media generated and technological narratives to visualize the realms joined by human imagination, perception, meaning and social change.
As both a photojournalist and abstract photographer, Gould sees each day in a new light, exploring light and shadow for new perception of the urban environment, and influenced by the theories and works of Walter Benjamin, Nam June Paik, Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno and John Maeda. His processes involve taking cultural, political and media messages out of the context of formal structure and introduces duplication, remix, distortion, juxtaposition and altered perception to explore both the context and meaning of the images that pervade modern life. Gould’s work has been exhibited at SIGGRAPH conferences and at group shows in San Francisco.
