Our Art / Oscar Bluemner

Oscar Bluemner

Trained as an architect and designer, Bluemner (1867–1938) was a prominent and influential American painter. After curator and artist Alfred Stieglitz introduced him to the novel styles of the European and American avant-garde, Bluemner decided to pursue painting full-time rather than architecture and developed his own expressive, modernist style. His expressive paintings were influenced by Cubist style, breaking his composition into segmented, geometric scenes tied together with a lush use of color.
