Our Art / Paul Cézanne

Paul Cézanne

Known for his vivid palettes and dynamic compositions, Cézanne (1839–1906) was influential in changing how artists translated reality onto the flat canvas. His distinct style of painting unstable, disarrayed compositions paved the transition from 19th-century Impressionism to 20th century Cubism. Through painting Cézanne sought to capture truth, which he viewed as including imbalance and void.

His later works are striking for their unstable, dynamic compositions painted in complex fields of color built from repetitive, sensitive brushstrokes. Both Matisse and Picasso are said to have remarked that Cézanne “is the father of us all.”
