Our Art / Rick Doble
For over 40 years, digital photographer and author Rick Doble has pushed the limits of photography using an exhaustive range of technologies and processes. Breaking from realist depictions of the everyday typical for the medium, Doble’s work explores representation itself through photography’s basic elemental components—light, color, and motion. Employing standard camera controls rather than digital manipulation, his photographs delve into a world where the real, the imagined, the poetic and the unknown intertwine. But Doble seeks not only the experiential. He injects into his practice a discourse on the metaphysical gap between the virtual and actual worlds; on the unconscious, unknown possibilities of parallel realities; and on the existence of kinetic energy within the space-time continuum. Invigorating and provocative, his photographs invite the viewer to imagine a different reality, a dream world spun from fields of light, hidden colors, and the places in between.
Doble is an internationally exhibited and award-winning photographer whose sensitivity to the physical and technical properties of the camera has influenced a new generation of artists. He is the author and photographer of three widely circulated books on digital photography and is considered the leading expert on experimental digital photography (the subject of his third book). Doble received both an M.A. from the Department of Radio, TV & Motion Pictures and a B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
