Our Art / Stephen Baumbach
For over 40 years, Boston-based digital photographer Stephen Baumbach has pushed the limits of photography using a range of techniques and natural subjects. At times elusive and captivating, much of his work blurs the lines between the real and imagined, the physical and the digital, the organic and the artificial. With subjects ranging from flowers and urban landscapes, to water and smoke, Baumbach’s use of light, composition, and originality refocus the viewer’s gaze towards abstract combinations of radiant colors, shapes, and textures unearthing the extraordinary in the common. His fascination with light and his inquisitive desire to explore hidden aspects of the physical world are at the forefront of Baumbach’s at once provocative and delicate digitally based practice.
Baumbach has photographed sites from around the world ranging from the Mojave Desert in California to the Shanghai cityscape. He received a degree in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, and his work has been exhibited nationally including at the Harbor Arts Festival, the South End Open Studios, the Canvas Fine Arts Gallery, and the Lee Kimball Design Studio in Boston, MA; Tunbridge Library in Vermont; and the Appell Gallery in Sacramento, CA.
