Our Art / Thomas Anshutz
A famed American painter and teacher, Anshutz (1851–1912) is known for his award-winning portraiture work. He was an early user of photography for painting studies, posing models and making prints to paint from. Although he continuously experimented with landscape painting, Anshutz is best-known for his intimate and compelling portraits of revelatory moments. He painted with extreme realism, rendering faces and figures with near invisible brushstrokes while at times painting fabric with looser strokes showing the artist’s hand.
