Our Art / Yue Li
Yue Li is a Chinese-American artist who was born in Beijing in 1988, and currently lives and works in Boston. He came to the United States to study art at the Rhode Island School of Design after deciding to pursue a career in art rather than computer science. His unique approach to artmaking incorporates his background in math and science to create precise digital works that utilize technology to explore themes of loss, alienation, memory, and the surreal.
Working in Photoshop, Li incorporates innovative techniques such as sampling textures from stone and concrete and sketching from live models on the computer in real time. Working in a wide range of styles that embrace technical, emotional, and conceptual schemas, the recurring narrative of the isolated individual in postmodern society is a constant. His influences include East Asian culture, graphic novels, animation, costume design and fashion. In addition to creating fine art, Li has worked as a freelance designer and illustrator for companies such as Google, Nanigans, and MIT’s Game Lab.
